Janison Edge - An
Acoustic Session In August 1999, Janison Edge performed at Whitchurch Festival. At this gig they played an acoustic session with three songs of their debut album The Services Of Mary Goode. Apparently they liked the sound of that, because they re-recorded those three songs and released them as the mini-album An Acoustic Session that same year. On the album they chose the same line-up as during the aforementioned festival: Sue Element on vocals, Mike Varty playing the piano and Ian Salmon on acoustic guitar. The booklet says it is ‘recorded live’. This means that the three of them played the songs together in the studio in one recording. I, personally, am very fond of this kind of acoustic sound. It’s very pure and warm. You can hear every instrument very well. I like the sound of acoustic piano and guitar. Add to that the fact that I like The Services Of Mary Goode as I wrote a few years ago in this same magazine, and you can imagine that I really like this little album. It starts with the simple song Oldman. In this song it’s just piano and vocals. I really like Sue’s voice here. The second track is Joker. This is a more up-tempo song. Now Ian comes in with beautiful guitar sounds. You would think you’d miss the drums in a song like this, but you don’t! I think this is because of Ian’s very rhythmic guitar playing. The third and already last song of this album is Julie Lies, a song I also liked a lot on the original album. It’s a pretty long track, over 7 minutes. It isn’t easy to keep an acoustic song interesting for so long, but these three people do it. So in short, if you like the sound of acoustic instruments, I think you will enjoy this album. The only negative thing I can say about it, is that it’s too short! Track list: 1. Oldman 2. Joker 3. Julie Lies By: Mijke Campschroer |
